What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small file or identifier stored on or read from a user’s device when visiting a website. Similar technologies may perform comparable functions.
Principles applied by Altivalis
Cookies that are strictly necessary for the operation of the website and the provision of an explicitly requested service may be used without consent where regulations permit. Non-essential cookies or trackers must only be stored or read after valid consent has been obtained where required.
Rejecting non-essential cookies must not prevent access to the website’s essential features. No non-essential cookie may be activated before the user has made a choice.
Cookie categories
| Category | Purpose | Duration | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Necessary | Operation, security, essential technical storage | As technically necessary | No consent where exempt |
| Preferences | Remembering non-essential choices | To be specified for each tool | Consent where required |
| Analytics | Understanding website use | To be specified for each tool | Consent unless an exemption applies |
| Marketing / advertising | Campaign measurement, personalisation or tracking | To be specified for each tool | Prior consent |
| Third parties / external content | Embedded services that may store trackers | Depends on provider | Prior consent unless exempt |
Detailed cookie list
The exact list of cookies and trackers must be generated after auditing the production version of the website. It must include, as a minimum: cookie/tracker name, provider, purpose, category, retention period and, where applicable, transfer to a third country. This list must be updated when a third-party service is added or removed.
Consent management
The banner must offer equally prominent options to accept or reject non-essential cookies. Boxes or choices must not be pre-selected. Simply continuing to browse, scrolling or remaining inactive does not constitute valid consent.
Users must be able to change or withdraw their consent as easily as they gave it, through a permanent link such as “Manage my cookies” accessible from the footer.
Duration and evidence of choices
The user’s choice may be remembered for a reasonable period to avoid asking for consent on every visit. Where necessary, Altivalis retains evidence of the choice made. A new consent request may be presented where purposes or providers change substantially.
